WORLD TRIP IN A MOGGIE

In 1973 my husband and I traded in our Ford Anglia saloon for a Morris 1000 8cwt van. We had decided to drive approximately 12000 miles from England to Australia to visit relatives. It took us 14 weeks, travelling through 17 countries including Iran, Afghanistan and India.

We took supplies of food, toiletries/clothes and spare parts with us so Graham built a false floor of chipboard between the wheel arches; we stowed boxes under this and slept on top when it was not advisable to pitch the tent! Every week or so we raised the floor to replenish the racks he had fitted down each side of the van.

Over several months before leaving the UK we gathered a fairly comprehensive supply of spares, some new, some second hand. This included radiator hoses, engine mounts, cables for anything that used one as well as a clutch plate and exhaust extension. However, although we used some spares for keeping the vehicle in good running order, such as brake linings, the only ‘breakdown’ we had was a puncture in one of the Town and Country rear tyres.( No problem, we had 4 spares!)

We had been given advice by BMC Cowley as well as the AA who also made up a route specially for us. We kept to this for some of the way but then local conditions meant inevitable detours. Petrol costs for the whole distance came to £109, the cheapest was in Iran and the dearest in Germany. Accommodation costs totalled less than £50, but this varied from the beach in Malaysia to a car park in Pakistan to a hotel in Australia. We also had to pay to ship ourselves and van from Southern India / Malaysia/Australia. Even so the grand total including buying the moggie was just under £1400 for the trip of a lifetime!

We would appreciate if classic car clubs would book approx. numbers in advance.

Classics attending the display area are permitted to arrive or leave at any time they like and will have a private exit gate to avoid any delays or overheating.

Cars in the indoor sales area will not be permitted to leave before 5pm

ROAD TRAFFIC (NATIONAL CAR TEST) REGULATIONS 2009 (SI 567, 2009)

The Minister for Transport legislated that from the 4th of January 2010 privately taxed vehicles first registered prior to the 1st of January 1980 shall remain exempt from the NCT.  Vehicles first registered after the 1st of January 1980 shall not benefit from NCT exemption and shall continue to be included in the class of vehicles required to undergo the NCT — in other words the rolling thirty year exemption no longer applies (refer to paragraphs 3(2)(b)(i) and 5(a) of SI 567, 2009).  The NCT will be required annually from the 1st of June 2011 for vehicles over ten years old.  Vehicles first registered prior to the 1st of January 1980 and which are taxed and licensed for use as public service vehicles (wedding cars, taxis, buses, etc,) shall continue to be required to have a valid NCT or DoE Test (as applicable to the category of vehicle).  This piece of legislation has not altered the rule concerning road tax and so the VinVet category of taxation continues to be available on a thirty year rolling basis under present legislation.

Where have all the Renault’s gone.?

It would seem that the French are more devoted to their car manufacturers than most other nations, All the French manufacturers consistently appear at the top of car sales in France.

I don’t think any manufacturer has produced so many models as Renault over such a short period, models that have sold millions, well most of them, we have written about the phenomenal success of the “5” I think we should tackle the 4 very shortly however for some unknown reason I got the 18 in my mind, though I have never owned one, it clashed with my Volvo period.

My father in law had one, a GTS, Eileen said he was as proud as punch when he came home with it, why not. My friend the Renault Dealer in south London drove one for a while, but then he drove most of the cars for only a while. He had a Feugo for a short period, another casualty?

Historically the 18 was built from 1978 until 1986 as far as Europe was concerned, however the South Americans built it until 1993, for Renault it was their first world car built at 10 other sites in Europe and South America, the true number built is somewhat hazy but we are talking somewhere around 3 million units.

The 18 was supposed to be a replacement for the 12 however demand was such that they were built together until the 12 was finally phased out in 1980, though there was a lot of the 12 in the 18, given that it only took 18 months from conception to production which in the motor industry is a very short time span.

The new car on the block came in four trim modes TL, GTL, TS and GTS, the TL and the GTL had 1397cc engine unit which had been in the 12, it was tuned for 63bhp and coupled to a four speed box, whilst the TS and GTS had a 1647cc A type  unit from the Renault 17 but without fuel injection however the bhp was 78, you got either a 4 speed box in the TS and a 5 speed in the GTS, both models had the option of a 3 speed automatic.

All four models were well equipped but for some unknown reason Renault fitted 3 stud wheels until 1980 when a Turbo and Diesel versions came out Renault then fitted 4 stud and in 1983 all models had 4 stud.

Going back in March of 1979 estate versions appeared, basically identical to the TL/Ts saloon, though the suspension was beefed up.

You will no doubt think this is a strange point to stop, however there is a great mystery which appears to be going to take some time to sort out, given the vast number of Renault cars manufactured in the seventies and early eighties, though to be honest it also concerns cars built in the nineties.

I ask one question:- Where have they all gone?, try Ebay and plenty of bits but very few cars, Classic car magazines, about the same, so how could a manufacturer make so many and have them go missing, okay Renault build quality was probably about average, fittings and equipment matched and in some cases was superior to other maker’s.

The one explanation so far is that Renault started fitting computerized bits and pieces in early eighties even then replacements were expensive is it that owners have preferred to dump such cars rather than pay the high prices?

Listing some of the models, 4, 5, 8, 10 12, 14, 15, 16 17, 18, 20 and so on, perhaps some one in the club can help shed a light on the subject.

Happy motoring, winter is on the way, how are your tyres? Remember cheap is not always the best policy.

Have scoured web sites looking for any eighties or earlier Renault, it would appear there are two reasons for the lack of cars, one is our old friend RUST which apparently attacks Renaults with a certain amount of vigor and secondly the bigger cars are used by Autobanger racers, so it would seem there is a rather large heap of scrap, however anyone determined to buy a Renault a good site to visit is “The classic Renault car club” actually found two cars one was a great looking 12 but at least it would be reliable place to look.

NEW REGULATIONS FOR CAR IMPORTS

The IVVCC has examined these regulations and we are satisfied that there is no apparent change in the law governing the importation of older vehicles, although the identification of each vehicle and its importer will now be better verified.  The new regulations enable the checking of imported vehicles to be carried out by an approved private business (the NCT contractor) instead of by Revenue.  NCT test centres have suitable facilities for examining vehicles.  There is a charge for the examination by the NCT, but this is credited against the VRT due on the imported vehicle.   The IVVCC would be very interested to hear from individuals who have experienced problems importing pre-1985 vehicles under the new arrangement (email jflarkin@eircom.net ).  Below is a summary of how the new regulations affect the private individual as interpreted by the IVVCC webmaster (in other words, not an official legal interpretation).

The importing person must make an appointment for a pre-registration examination with an NCT office not later than 7 days after the arrival in the State of the vehicle, and must register the vehicle to the satisfaction of the Commissioners not later than 30 days after its arrival in the State.

Where the vehicle is being presented by a person other than the person in whose name the vehicle is to be registered, a document is required authorising the importer to register the vehicle on behalf of the other person, and must be signed by that other person, and provide such other particulars relating to that person as the Revenue Commissioners consider necessary for the proper administration of the tax. In respect of the person in whose name the vehicle is to be registered the details required are:- the name of that person as it appears on that person’s passport, driving licence or such other document establishing that person’s identity as the Commissioners may specify;  the address of that person as it appears on a recent bank statement, utility bill or such other document establishing that person’s address as the Commissioners may specify;  the PPSN (personal public service number) of that person.

For the purposes of the registration of a vehicle the NCT office shall require the person presenting the vehicle for registration to sign a document confirming the vehicle details, and such document shall be retained by the NCT office.

In respect of the vehicle the following details are required:-  The vehicle identification number;  the make, model and variant;  the number of doors, seats and windows;  the level of CO2 emissions; the vehicle category by reference to the relevant EC type-approval certificate or EC certificate of conformity;  or any other documentation specified by the Commissioners for the purposes of confirming the categorisation of vehicles for the purposes of Chapter IV of Part II of the Finance Act 1992, and such other particulars, if any, relating to vehicles as the Commissioners consider necessary for the proper administration of the tax.
