A MORRIS OR A JAG ?

September 6th, 2011

Filed Under: News with 0 Comments

A Jaguar enthusiast who wanted to fit his two dogs in his cramped sports car found a novel solution – by fusing a Morris Minor to the back of it.

The result is a bizarre-looking creation made up of the two cars morphed together, with the sleek Jaguar XK150 front being matched with the rear of a Morris Minor Traveller.

The combination has led to a vehicle with an elegant front and a classically ugly but practical boot on the back.

The white car, named the Foxbat, is believed to be the only one in existence in the world and was built by a Jaguar enthusiast Geoffrey Stevens in the mid 1970s.

The late Mr Stevens, who worked as an industrial chemist in the tanning industry, built the vehicle to give him extra room to transport goods as well as his two Labrador dogs.

The car, which has been welded or bolted together in the middle, benefits from a much larger back than the ordinary 1959 Jaguar with the same 3.4 litre engine.

The hybrid has a 3.4 litre engine and has a French numberplate, though it was registered in the UK prior to 2000 with number plate ‘558 NOT’.

Tim Schofield, head of classic car department at Bonhams, said: ‘It’s a remarkable car.

‘Thanks to an expert named Peter Ingram, we now know the Foxbat was made by a Geoffrey Stevens around 1975 to 1977.

‘He was a Jaguar enthusiast and worked as an industrial chemist near Swindon.

‘He and his wife needed a more practical car to transport kit around with room for their two dogs and he decided to do his own conversion.

‘It took him several years to complete, using a very rusty Jaguar XK150 and a Morris Minor. You can see exactly where joins the other.

‘He even hand cut a Foxbat badge to put on the back.

‘It really is incredibly interesting and, as far as we know, it is the only one in existence.’

It was sold by Mr Stevens in the 1980s and spent many years in France before being transported back to the UK in 2008.

It is now being sold by Bonhams auctioneers at their Goodwood Revival Sale in Chichester, West Sussex, on September 16.

CANNON BALL RUN

September 2nd, 2011

Filed Under: News with 0 Comments

There is an upcoming event I thought you and your fellow car enthusiasts might be interested in.

The Cannonball Race (www.cannonball.org) is taking place on the 9th – 11th September.  They are kicking off from Merrion Square in Dublin but the official kick off will be in Mondello Park on Friday 9th September from 10:30 – 12:00. There will be some truly amazing cars on show so I thought you might like to pass this onto your members to go along and see some very unique cars up close and personal!

Cannonball Ireland is the annual gathering of supercar enthusiasts who drive in convoy on this adventurous and picturesque road trip around Ireland, raising funds for charity.

Good fun for a good cause, four-wheeled masterpieces and their roaring melody is what it is all about. The most prestigious and unique cars of the world will be parading through the breathtaking landscapes and charming cities and towns of the 2011 route; making this the most memorable motorised masquerade you have ever seen.

There will be no winner except for the Barretstown Camp Foundation and the thousands of kids who benefit it’s program every year.

As we are the charity that is benefiting from this so we’re just trying to get as many people as we can to Mondello Park on the Friday 9th to check out the cars, have a bit of a fan fair as they head off.  It’ll only be on for about an hour, but well worth a visit.  Would you be able to promote this amongst your fellow members, or indeed let colleagues, friends and family and anyone who’d like to come along and check out the cars!  It really a case of the more the merrier!

Hope you can all come!

Many thanks for your help with this, hope you see you out en force on the day

Much appreciated

Emma

CASTLEDERMOT VINTAGE DAY

September 1st, 2011

Filed Under: News with 0 Comments

Castledermot, Co. Kildare will host its 5th Annual Vintage Day on Sunday, 25th September 2011, for what promises to be a great day out for all the family.

The show takes place at a new venue this year on the Corcoran farm at Gorteengrone (on R448 Castledermot-Carlow Road).   This is just off the M9 motorway, exit 4.
Come and see traditional threshing from yesteryear, steam engines, tractor-pulling, and a large vintage working and display area.  You can also view traditional crafts such as weaving and butter-making.
There will be lots to entertain all, including funfair, pony rides, dog show, pet farm and lots of stalls to interest all.
A day not to be missed.  Admission is only €5 with children under-16 free.  For those interested, there will be a bus providing transport from Castledermot to the farm throughout the day.
Also, join us on Saturday evening, 24th September for a “Parade of Steam” through Castledermot, followed by a barbeque and music at The Castle Inn, Castledermot.
Proceeds of the day go to charity.  Castledermot Vintage Club has donated €89,000 to charities in the last four years.  This year’s main beneficiaries are The Luke Renehan Fund and Cancer Homecare.  The former is a trust fund to send 20-month old Luke Renehan from Co. Kildare abroad  for stem-cell treatment.  This will hopefully give Luke, who suffers from cerebral palsy, the chance to walk, talk, and enjoy a better quality of life.
